What Is Bitmoji?
Bitmoji definition: A Bitmoji is a personalized digital avatar, or personal emoji. In Snapchat, it represents a person across supported experiences, including their profile and Chat.
How Bitmoji Works on Snapchat
People can create or link a Bitmoji to a Snapchat account, then change its look over time. Snapchat says a Bitmoji can be shared in Chat and brought to life as a 3D Bitmoji. Some Snapchat Filters can also feature a Bitmoji.
- Avatar: A Bitmoji is tied to a person's account rather than a standard Unicode emoji character.
- Chat and profile: It can represent that person in Snapchat's supported social features.
- 3D experiences: Snapchat supports 3D Bitmoji in certain parts of the app.
Availability is platform- and feature-specific. A Bitmoji is not a universal replacement for every emoji in every messaging or social app.
Bitmoji and Snap Map
A linked Bitmoji can appear in the Snap Map experience, but the avatar does not turn on location sharing by itself. Snap Map location sharing is off by default. If a person chooses Only while using, the map updates their location only while Snapchat is open; after the app closes, it can show the last location from that session until Snapchat is reopened.
Snapchat also offers an Always, or background, sharing option for the selected friends and family a person chooses. That can update location after the app is closed. Ghost Mode stops location sharing. Because location can be sensitive, review the audience and sharing setting regularly, and share only with people you know and trust.
